two interesting stories

The NYTimes has two really interesting stories today.

In one, Diamonds are for Never , Ophrah/that new movie "Blood Diamonds" are convincing many women into giving up diamonds:

"Many women are saying, 'This is supposed to be a symbol of all things good and I don't want to look down on my finger and think of women and children being killed.'

In the other, Reversing Trends, a study shows breast cancer rates are dropping because less women are using post-menopause hormones. It's really fascinating and posits that African-American women tend to develop breast cancer less frequently because they generally use these hormones less often. But when African-American women DO develop breast cancer, it's usually a worse case (the hormone-precipitated cases are usually less severe). Very interesting.

I have long tried to guilt women about their gaudy rings, to little effect beyond making them annoyed at me. I would say: "It's really so beautiful that you have this eternal symbol of love that required hacking some African boy's arm off. It's so romantic." I understand that synthetic diamonds are now so sophisticated that even jewellers are having a hard time telling them apart from organic diamonds. (Strictly speaking, neither type of diamond is more "real" than the other.)

I don't like diamonds or even jewelry but undersatand why women do, I think. A male friend and I bought a ring together in high school that we gave to different girls at different times when trying to get with them. It didn't take long before the shat hit the fan and the girls no longer believed we loved or really was serious about them. The game played out far too soon. We eventually gave up trying to use it, and threw the ring in the garbage. But not before a few girl threw it back at us and called us some awful names. Mean heifers didn't know how to accept a gift. I've accidentally losted two wedding rings that I'm supposed to wear and purchased more jewelry for the wife than I wanted too, but she's not extravagant or wasteful and deserved it. She has repeatedly threatend to buy me another one for X-mas every year and I keep reminding her I'm far too clumsy and macho to keep up with any jewelry. After all, I know I'm married anyway.

I've heard a lot of unsavory things about the diamond industry and the lengths it goes to to protect it's profit margins. I've been waiting for a movie like Blood Diamonds to come out. :D
