Every Easter, His Holiness blesses us with profound and insightful words of hope. And despite the outcome of the recent Italian elections, which witnessed conservative prime minister Silvio Berlusconi--the Vatican's preferred candidate and the richest man in Italy--fall to the liberal, pro-gay, pro-feminist prime minister-elect Romano Prodi, we can know that the See of St. Peter will continue to roll ahead, as it has for millennia, transcending the ephemera of worldly politics.
So it is that Pope Benedict XVI has overcome his personal feelings of disappointment to uplift all of humanity with these gentle words of encouragement:
Today a slick campaign of propaganda is spreading an inane apologia of evil, a senseless cult of Satan, a mindless desire for transgression, a dishonest and frivolous freedom, exalting impulsiveness, immorality and selfishness as if they were new heights of sophistication.Happy Easter to you, too, Your Holiness. Happy Easter to you, too.

Tom, do you expect the Vatican and Christianity in general suddenly bow to the whims of Pop Culture? You and I both know it won't happen. To them, it's real, and it's happening.

Eh. If it were really real and happening for His Holiness, he'd have more reservations about supporting a vain, philandering xenophobe, who also happens to be the richest man in the friggin' country, for prime minister. It isn't all about abortion and gay marriage. Or at least it wasn't for that Jesus guy, if anyone's still pretending to pay any attention to him. Cheers, TH

Oh! See, other than who's running the Vatican, I'm completely and knowingly ignorant of who's running Italian politics at any given time. It nearly defines "Chaotic", you know. :) I'm not sure if the Pope was speaking on mundane politics or on a more general nature.

That's a good point--gay marriage supporters assumed he was talking about gay marriage, some folks assumed he was talking about the election. I assumed the latter, given the timing, but that could have been a mistake. The trouble with the Pope not being clear about who or what he's talking about is that it renders his statement so nebulous as to be pretty much meaningless. I feel like that legendary critic of "Louie, Louie": "I can't understand what they're singing, but I'm sure it must be obscene." Cheers, TH

Religion :) "The never ending contradiction." I personally feel no threat from gay folks, so I wonder why the established religious leaders from various religions whom preach a message of unity and peace feel so threatened by it, and yet continue to contradict themselves.
