Today finds a 'recommended' diary over at DailyKos, about a visitor to our lovely state and his "blue state" reactions to the people he encounters when he's working on Katrina relief in and around Laurel, Miss.

But they want me to know there is no racism in MS. Then they often proceed to tell me something racist. I quickly learned racists introduce themselves by saying, `there is no racism in MS today.'

Actually, the diary itself is reasonably open-minded and well-written. What follows it in the Comments is an occasionally interesting (and just as often rather irritating) discussion of why Democrats lose in the South and what makes it different from other parts of the country in terms of its politics. It's interesting to see that the North and South still have a lot to learn about one another.

I read about a hundred of the responding posts the other day when you first posted this. It was interesting to see an outsider's view. Mainly because I know that I have a tendency to put a "positive" face on Mississippi. It was very eye opening to see what the writer and others really think about the people that live here. Eye opening and a little disheartening.

It's also pretty interesting to me how many of the positive comments about MS (the youth vote, the turning tide, etc.) don't seem to develop much traction. Maybe that's not the point at DailyKos. There are some interesting conversations there, and it seem like the posting went on for a few days. The way their "threaded" system works, you have back track up the thread to see some of the replies to replies, etc.
