C-L: Johnson dodges questions from media

The Ledger reports:

Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr. entered City Council chambers to a standing ovation Tuesday morning.

An hour-and-a-half later, the council meeting over, Johnson had nothing to say as he dodged the media on the way to his office.

Brevity might be the tone for Johnson and the City Council until a new administration takes over in July. Johnson, a two-term mayor, lost to Frank Melton in the Democratic primary May 3. Melton faces Republican Rick Whitlow in the June 7 general election.

"Clearly, we are going to try to avoid anything controversial and big ticket until after the new administration is in place," Council President Leslie McLemore said. "The agenda really sets the tone and I would suspect that we're going to have a fairly pared-down agenda."

Johnson refused to take questions from reporters on Tuesday. City public information officials turned down a request Monday for an interview with Johnson and didn't return a phone call Tuesday.
