Joy Howard writes for AAN this week about the winners of AAN's recent two diversity grants. The top half of the article is about Thabi and her work at the JFP. An excerpt:

After completing a stint as campaign photographer for Mississippi Supreme Court Justice James Graves, and unhappy with the work she was doing waiting tables and substitute teaching, Moyo spotted an ad in the paper searching for a photojournalism intern at the Free Press. She rushed to the newsweekly's office the next day to apply.

"I got my portfolio—or what I had of one—together and took it there," she says. "They were as excited about me as I was about them." Shortly after beginning her new internship, Moyo found herself preparing to apply for the AAN Diversity Grant. She had already completed several shoots by the time the news arrived that she had received it.

"The thing that she did well was that she approached her internship as just that," says Ladd. "She sought out mentors. There were various photographers that she assisted with shoots, and she networked with as many people as she could along the way."

It goes without saying that we are very proud of Thabi and her work for the JFP. She has come very far in a few short months.

You have to love Thabi. She has such a wonderful personality and easy to talk to... that is not always true of us artists (smile). I got to know her better when she took over the Sunday night poetry at Santiagos, and I was convinced that her talents would be recognized. And just think: Thanks to successes like the JFP they are! The sky is the limit for Thabi--- and the Free Press.

My good friend Alex who works at Millsaps, lives in Belhaven, and helps me write cd reviews went to New College. It was great every visit I made there.

I did not, but I just moved back here (Clinton is my hometown) from Treasure Island, FL. Two very, very good friends of mine went to school there, and they are close to your age. Tara was an art major, and Iris was Gen. Curriculum but transferred to UF after a year.

As for living near the Gulf, I agree. I miss it sometimes. The laid back atmosphere. Treasure Island just had their first murder in 18 years. Big difference compared to Jackson.

All, Thabi took the photos of Bill Minor in a Sun-Herald feature today. Unfortunately, the photo credit is mispelled, at least in the online version, but I just left a message for the photo editor asking him to correct it. Also, Thabi would like everyone to know that, in the post just above, her friend Poetry July, posted it through her account. ;-)
