ACKSON - The winners of today's mayoral elections in Mississippi will get the glamor of local recognition, but they'll also face day-to-day demands of making sure potholes are filled and trash is picked up on time.

Voters in some cities, including Jackson, ousted their mayors during last month's primaries. In other places, including Hattiesburg, the incumbents are facing aggressive challengers.

Allan McBride, chairman of the political science department at the University of Southern Mississippi, said mayoral races are important but many receive less attention and generate less excitement than a presidential race.

"It is peculiar because we like to think of ourselves as being a local people, and local government is closer to us," McBride said.
