Tougaloo Honors MLK, Jr.

The public is invited to participate as Tougaloo College commemorates the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with the annual King Convocation Celebration Service in historic Woodworth Chapel. It takes place on Wednesday, January 12th at 10:00 a.m. with the theme, : "Building on the Dream," and our speaker for the occasion will be The Honorable Percy W. Watson, Chairman, Ways & Means Committee, Fourth Congressional District, Second Supreme Court District, Hattiesburg, MS.

Special guest speaker will be Dr. Gene C. Young, professional consultant, motivational speaker and former Assistant professor of Speech and English, Jackson State University. Dr. Young is also the former Chairman of the board of directors for the West Jackson Community Development Corporation as well as a member of the Martin Luther King Holiday Commission, State of Mississippi. This program officially begins the annual King celebration which will continue on Monday, January 17th with a series of special events beginning with the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Prayer Breakfast hosted by Tougaloo and Millsaps Colleges.

TOUGALOO AND MILLSAPS COLLEGES CELEBRATE THE LEGACY OF DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

Tougaloo College along with Millsaps College join together to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a series of events honoring the Civil Rights leader on Monday, January 17th. The theme of this year's event is "Embrace The Dream…It's More Than Just A Day," "Building on the Dream: A Day of Leadership, Service, and Peace." It begins with the annual Prayer Breakfast from 8:00-10:00 a.m. at Tougaloo College's Holmes Hall auditorium, and will be hosted by both colleges. The guest speaker will be Elder Thomas Harris'59, Pastor, First Christian Church, Port Gibson MS, and there will be a special performance by Tougaloo College playwright Clinnesha Dillon.

From 1:00-4:00 p.m., Tougaloo and Millsaps Colleges will team up to work on a Habitat for Humanity Community building project located at 352 East Davis Street in Jackson. At 6:30 p.m. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. will hold a Martin Luther King , Jr. Candlelight Prayer Vigil on the Woodworth Chapel lawn, and the day concludes at 7:00 p.m. with a Commemorative Service in Woodworth Chapel. Guest speaker will be Rev. Dr. Samuel Boyd, Pastor, Pearl Street A.M.E. Church and there will be special musical performances by the AKA Chorale and Westhaven Gospel Choir.
