Another place that hasn't gotten a lot of play in the national news (Weather Channel, CNN, etc.) is Hattiesburg, which was right in the path of Katrina and reportedly has gotten pummeled while Katrina was still Category 2. C-L posted some stories about Hattiesburg written by Hattiesburg American earlier today:

WJTV also did a lot of coverage on Hattiesburg. Melissa Faith Payne did some interviews and pointed out some of the damage. The worst I saw was a house with a pine tree that landed on the top of it and crushed part of the roof. It's amazing that the metal poles in front of the house buckled and did not completely bend under the weight of that tree.

Has anyone heard about the Purvis area? I keep checking the Hattiesburg American and Clarion Ledger web site and they have both been extremely helpful. I have friends in Purvis and am worried sick because I can't get through to them and even if they could get to Hattiesburg, they probably couldn't call anyway.

My family lives in Purvis. The only major damage I have heard of is of Bass Memorial Academy off 11 towards Talowah. There are lots of trees down everywhere but other than the church and the school getting significantly damaged, I haven't heard of any other major problems. The last time I heard from them was Monday night around 7pm after the eye had passed over. Their electricity went out shortly thereafter. My friend was able to instant message me on Wednesday from her cell and she said there was no electricity to pump gas in Purvis either. Other than that, I don't know if there is any way for people to get food or other supplies. I haven't heard of any fatalities as a result from the storm. I would go down there but the Interstate is covered with trees and virtually impassable.

FEMA is setting up at Bass Memorial Academy off of Hwy 11 in between Purvis and Lumberton.
