David Hampton: Must choice be governance ‘or' glitter for mayor – not both?

Style vs. substance seems to be choice politicians offer these days.

When it comes to modern voters, it seems to all be about style and charisma. I guess that is why political consultants and ad agencies make so much money. They have to create that "just right" image for candidates.

While columnists and editorial writers often bemoan the shallowness of political campaigns, it does take a candidate with personal political skills to get elected and to be successful. And it takes an official who understands the complexities of government to actually govern after the votes are counted.

Candidates and elected officials usually are stronger in one area or the other.

I think that is the question voters face in the Jackson mayoral election between incumbent Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr. and challenger Frank Melton.
