Jackson Free Press to Receive Two AAN Awards

June 3, 2004: The Association of Alternative Newsweeklies announced today that the Jackson Free Press is winning awards in at least two categories in the association's 2004 awards competition. AAN said today that JFP editor Donna Ladd is one of six writers who will win multiple awards—in the Columnist and the Music Criticism categories. The exact awards (first, second, third) will be announced at AAN's national convention on June 25 in San Antonio. The Jackson Free Press is one of 30 alternative newsweeklies to win multiple nominations this year. Only one other first-year member, the Long Island Press, is nominated this year; the Jackson Free Press is the only first-year member to be chosen for multiple awards.

The Jackson Free Press was accepted into AAN in 2003 during a rigorous admissions process in its first year in business—and is the first publication from the state of Mississippi to be accepted into the organization, alongside 121 other alternative publications including the Village Voice, the Chicago Reader, the Los Angeles Weekly and the Memphis Flyer. To become a member of the association, a newsweekly must show the ability to do in-depth journalism, demonstrate excellent writing and design, meet accepted journalistic ethics standards, and other criteria.

Submissions for the Columnist award include a selection of Ladd's Editor's Notes from calendar year 2003; the music criticism submission was Ladd's "Mr. Dylan and Mr. Evers" piece, written about last year's Jubilee! JAM.

The Free Press is also very proud of our sister publication, the Colorado Springs Independent, which is one of only four publications receiving five awards this year. Ladd was the first editor of the Independent, when it launched in 1993.

The winners of the award for Best Covers are the only ones so far unannounced by AAN.
