Dean's Midnight Note

Here's an e-mail that went to Dean's e-mail list in the middle of the night after Dean's unimpressive third-placing showing in Iowa (BTW, is anyone else as thrilled as I am that Gephardt dropped out? Argh.) ...
Dean: It is close to midnight at the end of a long day. But I want to take a moment and say a special word of thanks before I get on the plane for New Hampshire. If you had told us one year ago that we were going to come in third in Iowa, we would have given anything for that. Despite the attacks from all sides, they could not defeat us. You worked hard. And now we're going to New Hampshire. We will not quit now -- or ever. We will take our country back.

We need your help now more than ever. We must raise $1,000,000 by next Tuesday's primary. Your help now is absolutely critical. Please send your contribution in the next 48 hours:

http://www.deanforamerica.com/contribute

Your work has carried us to where we are. Together we will fight for healthcare for everyone -- and to restore America's moral leadership in the world. Once again we will give a voice to ordinary Americans. And together we will win.

Thank you,
Governor Howard Dean, M.D.

Was watching the Today show before work this morning and it was noted that the winners in Iowa historically have lost in the end. Thought that was an interesting point but little-to-no informaiton was provided to support the statement. Couldn't agree more about Gephardt!

Two things I was wondering: What did y'all think about Dean's concession speech? Also, what do you think about this Newsday article concerning the speech? On a completely unrelated note, why does the JFP require 600 seconds between comments?

I haven't seen the video clips, but I have heard it on the radio. Personally, I think most people are making way too much of it, in much the way they make way too much of his 'anger'. The Daily Show did a funny segment on showing Kerry all pumped from winning (not) compared to Dean being all depressed and losing (not). Kerry is such a corpse, I have a hard time believing he'd be able to defeat Bush. I like Dean's non-concession concession speech. But, that's just me.

Since I was not there, I can not fathom the energy of the participants. It seemed like a pep rally of sorts. I don't see what the big deal is about Dean getting hyped up and attempting to boost his follower's morale and his own. Of that speech, I've seen that one snip-it over and over again. Hell, even Chris from Hardball said it was being abused and he's not featherweight. I personally feel this quote represents my views on the speech: Motivational experts, however, disagreed. "I thought his approach last night was very appropriate in the context," said Jeff Keller, a motivational speaker based in Oyster Bay and author of "Attitude is Everything." "Here's a guy who suffered a crushing defeat and he has a base of support that's largely young people and young people respond to energy." Dean's yelp still has nothing on Bush's silly faces and mis-use of words... ;-)

There's a new story on Reuters at Dean Jokes About 'Screeching' in Iowa "Dean has been dogged by the fist-pumping, sleeve-rolling, shrieking remarks. He has been asked about it in more than a dozen radio and satellite television interviews. "The context was 3,500 kids waving American flags who'd worked their hearts out for us for three weeks, and I really felt I owed them an uplifting speech, so, I don't know what it looked like on television," he said in the interviews. "But I understand the audience wasn't shown, which is really too bad because it was really a terrific rallying cry."

I don't really understand all the screeching hysteria, either. Reminds me of the hoopla over Gore's earth tones. I really hate the corporate media, but you all know that. ;-) My take on Iowa is that it didn't mean a whole lot. It didn't mean that Dean is out by any means -- just study the history of Iowa caucuses -- it's rather goofy to prognosticate such a thing. My biggest feeling after Iowa is thank goodness Gephardt is history; I really feel like he dragged Dean into the mud, and put him on the defensive with all the personal attaacks, and the rabid media then went crazy over Dean's response to being in the gutter. I might have voted against Dean and Gephardt had I been an Iowan as well. It'll be intriguing to watch what happens next; the game is far from over. One thing I will say for the record: I don't believe Kerry has a snowball's chance in hell of beating Bush, so I'm not hankering for him.
