For the second year in a row, the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies has awarded a JFP intern one of two diversity grants given to applicants from around the country. We just learned that Thabi Moyo—a graduate of Murrah High School and Howard University—has received a grant of $2,500 to intern at the JFP in spring 2005. Thabi will be training as a photojournalist with a heavy emphasis on neighborhood reporting. We are very, very proud of Thabi and welcome her to the JFP family! And we thank AAN for their continued support of the Jackson Free Press. The JFP is the first, and only, newspaper ever from the state of Mississippi granted membership in the prestigious association of alternative newsweeklies in cities throughout the United States and Canada.

Last year, then-Tougaloo senior Ayana Taylor received the AAN diversity grant to cover the state Legislature. Ayana then was admitted to the Institute for Alternative Journalism at Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, where she studied last summer. She then returned to the JFP as a reporter.
