I suppose I should have tempered the foregoing snippiness with some creative alternatives. So here goes-"girly" things to do in metro Jackson that are easy on the pocketbook and still allow you to respect yourself in the morning (and you can even bring your kids along!): The Top Fifteen 1) The Preschool Room at the Mississippi Natural Science Museum. Call 354-7303 for special events and storytimes. 2) The fountains at Highland Village. If you catch the wind just right, the spray can tickle your face as you linger. 3) The benches at Dogwood Festival Market. You don't even have to go into the stores. Just relax, walk around, window shop, and listen to the music piped in on speakers. 4) Cookies at the Cookie Co. in Northpark Mall. 5) Driving across the spillway in early afternoon. Watch for seagulls, sailboats, and waterskiers 6) The Pearl City Park on Highway 80. Check for amenities at the park nearest you. 7) The Oz Shop at Lemuria Bookstore. Eventually you should buy something--so indulge every once in a while if you're a repeat visitor. Stop by the Banner Hall fountains on your way out 8) The ETV Learning Store in Rainbow Plaza. If your kids are devoted PBS Kids watchers, all the characters featured there are familiar friends. 9) Walking path around Crossgates Lake in Brandon. don't forget to take day-old bread to toss out on the water for ducks if they beg too insistently 10) Broad Street Bakery. Great sandwiches and soups for Saturday lunch. 11) Kid's section at Barnes and Noble Bookstores. Special free programs are available on an ongoing basis; call 991-3835 for more information. 12) Olde Tyme Commisary. Locations in Highland Village and Dogwood Festival. Call 366-1849 for more information. 13) Northpark Mall decorations at Christmas. The prettiest trees are in McRae's Department store and Lindz' Christmas Store 14) McAlister's in Brandon. Great signature sandwiches, soups, salads, and all the little extras for kids' meals that don't involve promoting the latest blockbuster movie. 15) Library storyhour. Check your local library for its own programs--free fun for any ages. Bonus tip: A walk around the neighborhood--wherever you live--just look around and remind yourself of why you live where you live. (slightly altered from a previously published version)

JW, you missed the point of this particular guide--the word "dangerously." This one's in honor of the Boss Queen and those thousands and thousands of women pouring into J-town this weekend looking for a bit of freedom and decadence, which is wonderful for the spirit in moderation. And many of them will be back on the treadmill Monday a.m. (Jill Browne is a fitness guru, after all.) And the JFP is more focused than any other local publication on promoting preventive health and wellness, rather than pharmaceuticals and going under the knife: We regularly write about vegetarianism, reducing smoking and secondhand smoke, drinking in moderation, exercise, wellness, body work and so on. But, dude, like it or not, *this* is the dangerous issue. And, even if I don't eat meat, I'd much rather see someone grab a Subway dog and have a rich cultural experience to boot, then sit on the sofa with a Quarter-Pounder and the TV on the weekend. Many of your suggestions are very nice, though, especially those that get people outside and away from the boob tube. They are more appropriate for our spring fever focus coming up next issue. One thing, though: Your ideas are extremely Northeast Jackson and suburban-focused, and we're about the whole, diverse city of Jackson, and the great stuff to do all over the city. Thanks much for the ideas, though, and I'm sure our readers will try out many of them. On, and the ETV store--which was my favorite for gift-shopping--in the Rainbow Plaza has closed. I'm sure too many folks chose to shop in a mall instead. Boo, hoo.

Oh, and I can't imagine buying a book "every once in a while" in such a wonderful bookstore as Lemuria. I can't walk out of there empty-handed, and I can't imagine making corporate books chains fatter and happier when we have such a wonderful bookstore in our midst. For discounts, buy a family membership to the Mississippi Museum of Art and use your membership card for discounts every time you buy your books at Lemuria or your CDs across the hall at MusiQuarium. And rather than buying cookies from a mall kiosk, our visitors and residents alike should visit the wonderful bakery at Mikhail's Northgate. And if you want to see Christmas decorations, don't go to the mall, either. Yuck. Drive through northwest Jackson or one of those funky trailer parks south of the city in Rankin County. Them's some Xmas deco, baby. OK, I must stop now before anti-mall/chain fervor takes over my day. All y'all, remember to shop local and support our own. As we always say around here, "Think global, shop local."

Actually, George, I'm a mom with 2 girls under the age of 7 who have to go to bed at 8 p.m. So everything I listed was free (or close to it) and open during daylight hours :). Sorry, not everyone that reads this site has the same definition of fun--isn't that what diversity is all about? ;) PS I used Pearl City Park to represent all the free park space in the metro area-- as an alternative to paying for Chuck E. Cheese (the horror)

See the Hal & Mal's Web site for details: http://www.halandmals.com/stpat/ George might have been a bit harsh, but I do suggest to JW that all our readers look for both adult and family fun west of I-55 and out of corporate chains and bland 'burbs more often: the Mississippi Museum of Art, the Smith Robertson, city parks, libraries, ethnic foods, you name it, await in the big city. Come on over and mix it up a bit. But enough on that; the kiddies aren't going to steal this one. This is a "dangerous" Chicks guide for girls-without-babes and for the days and nights when moms hire that babysitter or leave the tots with daddy so they can let their curls fly a bit.
