April is Islamic Heritage Month

On Tuesday, March 22, Mayor Tony Yarber announced that April will be Islamic Heritage Month.

The events begin today, Friday, April 1, with the opening of Tougaloo professor Ann Saunders' Islamic art exhibit at the International Museum of Muslim Cultures in the Arts Center of Mississippi. The exhibit, which is free, runs through May 15.

Each week in April will have events centered around Muslim cultures, such as the Arab American Culture Presentation at the Muslim Museum on Saturday, April 2, and the African and African American culture presentation on April 16. On April 19, Jackson and Mbour, Senegal will have an official sister-city signing ceremony at the Mississippi Museum of Art.

On April 30, the International Museum of Muslim Cultures will host an all-day Islamic heritage festival at the Mississippi Museum of Art. It will include children's activities, food from different cultural groups, Islamic art, a fashion show, traditional dances and music, and more.
