All the sudden it seems like downtown Jackson is getting boozier.
The Yarber administration floated a plan recently to seek "resort status" for a http://www.jacksonfreepress.com/news/2015/oct/20/yarber-downtown-resort-plan-draws-council-scrutiny/">large zone in downtown near and around the King Edward Hotel; resort status allows bars to stay open all night and liberalizes some other drinking laws within the zone. Detractors have questioned why the proposal cuts out areas such as Commerce Street, where a number of bars (including Hal and Mal's, Martin's Lounge and One Block East) do a thriving music-plus-booze business.
Likewise, we learned today that http://catheaddistillery.com">Cathead Distillery has opened their long-awaited plant in downtown Jackson, moving from a 7,000-square-foot facility in Madison to the new 20,000-square-foot building in downtown. (Assistant Editor Amber Helsel plans a tour next week; we're taking bets on whether she makes it back to the office afterward.)
Now the http://msbusiness.com/2015/11/breaking-news-colorado-developer-wants-shot-at-jacksons-stalled-farish-st-project/">Mississippi Business Journal is reporting that a new developer may be interested in the stalled Farish Street entertainment district, a project that has been on the back burner since the Jackson Redevelopment Authority and Watkins Development LLC (jfp.ms/watkins) embroiled one another in lawsuits.
As reported by Ted Carter of MBJ, the new developer, Leroy C. Smith of LCS Land Development LLC, may also be willing to pay the JRA $1.6 million to help it settle a dispute with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
