Several major changes are in store for the upcoming 90th Academy Awards following a meeting of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Board of Governors on Tuesday, March 28. The board announced the changes today, Friday, April 7, on the http://www.oscars.org/news/awards-rules-approved-90th-oscarsr">Oscars website.
At the meeting, the board approved the rules and campaign regulations for the next Oscars, with the biggest shifts taking place in the documentary and animation categories.
Most notably, limited-series or multi-part documentaries will no longer be eligible for awards consideration, following last year's Oscar winner, "OJ: Made in America." The documentary categories will only apply to feature-length documentaries, already removing several popular frontrunners for the next awards season.
In the animation field, the board chose to open nominations voting to all eligible Academy members for the first time, rather than a select branch in that craft. The nominations round will also drop its former numerical scoring system in favor of a preferential system like the one used for determining Best Picture.
