There's never a slow news week in Jackson, Miss., and last week was no exception. Here are the local stories JFP reporters brought you in case you missed them:

  1. Before tragedy struck in the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal in Charleston, S.C., with the killings of nine worshippers Wednesday, June 17, AME officials were preparing to convene in New Orleans on June 29 for the Council of Bishops and general board meeting.
  2. Jackson State University held a groundbreaking ceremony June 18 for a proposed 24,000-square-foot engineering classroom complex, a two-story addition to the College of Science, Engineering and Technology building on campus.
  3. On June 9, Hinds County Sheriff Tyrone Lewis invited the Jackson Free Press to his office to his office to respond to Victor Mason, explain his famous holiday-themed billboards and say why he deserves to remain the county's top law-enforcement officer.
  4. A vocal and influential bloc—parents of special-needs children and groups advocating for them—aren't fully convinced that Initiative 42 will be good for their kids and, for the time being, are remaining neutral as legal and political battle lines harden.
  5. Cameron Stewart and Amber Cameron's story came to life in "L Word Mississippi: Hate the Sin," a film that first aired last August on Showtime.
  6. U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves recently ruled that the Mississippi Department of Corrections still has a ways to go in cleaning up Walnut Grove prison and left a consent decree in place so that a court could monitor MDOC’s progress.
  7. Each Father's Day, we present the Guys We Love issue, which highlights men who are making a difference in the community. This year's batch is no exception.
  8. In many ways, craft beer's boon mirrors Fondren. Both emphasize local support. As with craft breweries, the vast majority of businesses in the neighborhood are small and local.
  9. Author Janice Singleton’s “Caught” tells the lessons that she learned going from a Mississippi corrections officer to a federal inmate.
  10. Barnette's Dry Bar offers Jackson residents a salon experience that involves no cuts, colors or other processes, focusing on blow drying, styling and shampooing.
