There's never a slow news week in Jackson, Miss., and last week was no exception. Here are the local stories JFP reporters brought you in case you missed them:

  1. At this week's regular Board of Supervisors meeting, supervisors agreed to explore the possibility of privatizing some or all of the Hinds County Detention Center at Raymond's operations. Read more here.
  2. Jackson Women's Health Organization owner Diane Derzis issued a statement pointing out the irony in that Hospital Management Associates has refused JWHA admitting privelages over their abortion policies while HMA is under feder investigation for pressuring doctors and hospital staff to admit ER patients to boost profits.
  3. Harvard professor and political consultant Steve Jarding capped off last week's Mississippi Black Leadership Summit by telling a small group of students and community leaders what he believes it takes to be a leader. Read more here.
  4. Mississippi artist Glennray Tutor is participating in the event “Unburied Treasures: Greatest Hits” Dec. 18 at the Mississippi Museum of Art. Read the JFP's story on Tutor here.
  5. The Mississippi Museum of Arts' New Collector's Club began in 2005 as a means to support new collectors and generate interest in contemporary art and the Mississippi Museum of Art, and is open to art enthusiasts as well as serious collectors or just casual collectors. Read more here.
  6. On Tuesday, Jan. 15, youth from all over Mississippi will come to Jackson to talk to state legislators as part of an American Civil Liberties Union-sponsored event titled "From the Schoolhouse to the Statehouse." Read the full story here.

  8. Jesse Houston is bringing fresh ideas to an iconic Mississippi eatery, City Grocery in Oxford. Houston, who parted ways with Jackson's Parlor Market in October, was appointed chef de cuisine of City Grocery last month.
  9. The Jackson Public Schools Board of Trustees is refinancing millions worth of the district's bond debt. The $55 million debt, which originated years earlier to pay for school building improvements and new construction, will be restructured to take advantage of lower interest rates.
  10. Suspects Jarvis Johnson and Cytize Brown are still in custody after a Wednesday hearing on armed-robbery charges for the Nov. 30 incident at Swell-O-Phonic Skateboard Company at N. State St.
