The Beat of Crossroads

The annual Crossroads Film Festival focuses mainly—as it should—on film. But Mississippians can't live on movies alone. We have to have tunes, and Crossroads never fails to deliver on that score, if you'll pardon the pun.

This year, in addition to dozens of films for your viewing pleasure, the festival features pickin' and blowin' and singin' on all three days by Mississippi musicians and bands. Here's what you can look forward to:

Friday, April 13
4:30-6:30 p.m.—Jason Turner starts things off in the music category with a show for pass holders only at the Filmmaker Reception at the Cedars (4142 Old Canton Road).
6:30-7:30 p.m—Liver Mousse, comprised of troubadour Cody Cox of Furrows and drummer Caitlin McNally, performs at the Malco Grandview Theatre (2211 Grandview Blvd., Madison).
9 p.m. to 1 a.m.—Buddy & the Squids and the Southern Komfort Brass Band perform at Hal & Mal's (200 S. Commerce St.). Buddy & the Squids calls itself "the only surf-rock cover band in Mississippi performing the classics of The Ventures, Dick Dale and The Shadows to current numbers from The Mermen, Aqua Velvets, Man or Astro-man and more." The Southern Komfort Brass Band says its members are "schoolteachers and repairmen by day, New Orleans-style brass-band by night." Admission is $8, $6 for society members.

Saturday, April 14
2:30-3:30 p.m.—Genn Hicks and Jay Wadsworth perform at the Malco Grandview Theatre (2211 Grandview Blvd., Madison).
4-6 p.m.—TB Ledford plays at the Haute Pig for a second filmmakers reception (1856 Main St., Madison). Pass holders only.
5 p.m.—The Music Video Showcase at Malco Grandview Theatre (2211 Grandview Blvd., Madison) features 20 music videos from Mississippi and the South, southern musicians and filmmakers. Featured bands include Gregg Caraway, Nathan Bankston, Jake Wood, The Grayces and many more.
9 p.m. to 1 a.m.—Jim White (outer-space alternative country) and Grayson Capps & The Lost Cause Minstrels ("scrumptious gothic gumbo," according to American Songwriter) perform at Hal & Mal's (200 S. Commerce St.) Admission is $10, $8 for society members.

Sunday, April 15
2:30-3:30 p.m. Spirits of the House—a traditional Celtic band formed in 1998—plays at the Malco Grandview Theatre (2211 Grandview Blvd., Madison).
