Weekend Happenings

For intrepid souls, this weekend's big thing is the third annual Mississippi Blues Marathon, kicking off at 7 a.m. Saturday at Capitol and State streets. Come out and show your support for the runners, but wear a hat, scarf, mittens and lots of layers. High temps should be somewhere south of 40 degrees. Warm up Saturday night with the Blues Crawl at local venues, including Fire, Underground 119, Martin's, Ole Tavern and F. Jones Corner.

Today (Friday) is the last day to see the "Monsters of the Deep" exhibit at the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, and the Power APAC art exhibits at the Jackson-Evers Airport and at Sneaky Beans in Fondren. Tonight, catch Emma Wynters and Barry Pace at Kathryn's in Ridgeland. Find more info on these events and more at the No. 1 place to begin your search for what to do in Jackson: The JFP Best Bets page, of course.

If the marathon isn't your thing, Saturday, bundle up the munchkins and take advantage of the Jackson Zoo's offer of half-price admission during the cold snap. While you're there, say hello to Ruby, the zoo's latest arrival. Then go warm up at the Mississippi Museum of Art and "Jim Henson's Fantastic World." Whether you're young or young at heart, enjoy Leland Day in honor of Henson's Mississippi hometown, and at 6 p.m., stick around for "The Muppet Movie."

Find plenty of other goings-on by visiting the JFP Events Calendar. Whether it's the Habitat for Humanity application meeting, the "Baby, Let's Play House" book signing at Lemuria, a cake decorating workshop or Mozart by candlelight at Belhaven University, you're sure to discover something to pique your interest. And if live music is more your thing, head straight for the JFP Music Listings to find where your favorite performer or DJ is this weekend, or be an explorer to discover something new. With a couple dozen choices for Saturday alone, it's the best place to find tunes in Jackson.

For brides-to-be, Sunday is the Premier Bridal Show at the Jackson Convention Complex starting at noon. Sunday is also a great day for brunch, lunch or dinner at one of the area's restaurants. Come to think of it, any day is a good day to have someone else cook and do the dishes. Be sure to check the JFP Restaurant Listings and the Menu Guide. You're sure to find some mouthwatering selections, with everything from ribs to sushi, pizza to pirogi, and hummus to veggie burgers.

Is something missing? To make sure your event is listed on the JFP calendars, send the information to [e-mail missing] or [e-mail missing]. Or, add your event yourself. It's easy!
