Ellington

Located on the corner of Gallatin and West Capitol street, Dreamz Jxn is a three-story club and entertainment complex in downtown Jackson. Inside the club are sophisticated features that include 25 plasma screens, VIP rooms, three bars and three dance floors.

Since the grand opening of Dreamz last April, the club has gained a following of people dedicated to the attendance of parties and events. Recently the club hired new management to target a wider population.

Martin White, 27, became Dreamz manager this month and says he is focusing on creating more events for the venue. Some of the events already on the calendar include "Workplay Mondays," a mixer for young professionals, and "Centric Thursdays," a night of hip hop and neo-soul hits. On Thursdays and Fridays admission is $5, and for ladies entrance and drinks are free before 11 p.m. Saturdays are currently reserved for private events.

"Since we've gotten started, there has been a whole new audience, and it's been a chain reaction," White says.

Dreamz is not only the latest club in Jackson, but it is also a part of a franchise, owned by Greenville, Miss., native Felix Murray. Dreamz has seven locations in cities throughout the country including Atlanta and Chicago.

Drummin, Dreamz is definitely a venue that welcomes everyone! As I'm sure all venues in Jackson are. The seperation is "implied" at some places but not at this one. You should come by the Monday networking event that goes on Mondays right after work. Last Monday there were white and Black, even Latino young/old professionals in there enjoying happy hour. Matt Allen and I enjoyed it thouroughly. I only like frequenting places where the crowd is diverse. On Fridays I saw a mixed crowd dancing and having a good time oblivious to whether or not they were "allowed" to come. Its a new day downtown Drummin and by reading this piece I don't think there was ANYTHING in this article that implies that. Everyone White and Black go out and support these guys especially on Mondays. They are helping the rebirth downtown as well. Ill be there.

Drummin, you experience negativity from other people in any neighborhood you go too, especially if you don't meet the discription of the average person that frequents that area. I have an older model Honda with a Hinds plate and was visiting a friend which at the time lived in a gated community in Madison, needless to say a neighbor came over to check on my friend to see if she was alright, if she needed to call the police, if she was being held up. She wouldn't accept he reply that everything was fine so she called the police anyway. There is no color barrier, to my knowledge, at really any of the clubs in Jxn, with the exception of maybe one, as mentioned earlier. My mother is a dispatcher which handles alot of the night clubs security accounts, she knows Mr Freelon personally and does frequent his establishment. I have been a frequent at Freelons last year. I have clubs, pubs in areas of Jackson where seeing a white person is not on the average day to day basis and I might have been the only white person in there but it doesn't mean I wasn't welcome. I had people staring at me but still had fun and experience some of the best treatment and customer service by the establishment's staff. That doesn't say I wasn't welcome, it was just odd to them that I chose to came. Pick a club and go, black, white, red, blue, green it does not matter. Even if there aren't many members of your race there that particular time, does not mean you are not welcome. This is 2010 and lets move past this race barrier. This is probably one of the biggest issues that still hold Jackson down. Jackson has alot of places to have fun and shake a tailfeather. Forget the race issue, get out and have fun. Dreamz is definately mixed, recently Y101 had been out on Friday nights promoting the club and their marketing alone tells you that you are welcome. Again, race has no barrier and we need to move past that so that EVERYONE can enjoy what the city of soul has to offer.

Indeed Kenneth. I think at times Friday and Saturday nights are rumored to be more segregated than Sunday mornings. Partially because of outrageous propoganda like the story Drummin just told. I worked at th Advocate for years and frequented clubs there and there hasn't been a real "pimp" on that street in decades lol. But it sounds good because it fits a stereotype that people expect to hear about Black neighborhoods or downtown. Nice one lol. I suggest Drummin you come down to Dreamz and enjoy happy hour on Monday and see for yourself apparently the many white folks there felt very welcomed and I hear they're really reaching out to everyone.

Propaganda?! How dare you! Ok, here is what happened. I was walking out of Frank Jones at 4:00 am on a Saturday/Sunday and walking back to my car on Farish. This black fellow comes walking in my direction sort of out of the woods/brush by the abandoned buildings next to the bar. I was not scared, but on high alert. He was wearing an old school 80's Run DMC hat, a red shiny vest with no shirt on underneath, and what looked like goldish baggy pants. He had about 5 black women following behind him and he did make that statement to me. Ok, maybe this was not an actual "pimp" persay. I don't know if he actually rented these women out, or if he perhaps he was just quite the ladies man. But how else would you describe this individual, considering he was walking around Farish with no apparent establishment besides F. Jones in the vicinity, and I know he wasn't in there.

I can show you exactly where he was. It was on the corner of Farish and Hamilton. Maybe he wasn't a pimp, but I didn't like to be called out and told to leave the area because of my race. There was noone else around because I had to park a block away from F. Jones because it was packed, as most usually do. It was also 4:00 am. Considering I have seen prostitutes walking through that area at night on multiple occasions, both now and when it was Field's Cafe and the short-lived Mista Mista Magic (about which I have another strange story), why is it hard to believe I would see a pimp? I didn't think he was a pimp at first, but after I sobered up I decided he was because I had never seen anyone wearing an outfit like that. I, too, am white and go to many places in Jackson and I don't feel racial tension. Since I'm being called out, I gotta responsd. Yeah you are attacking me Kenneth, but it's cool. When you assume, you make an "ass" out of "u" and "me," but it's cool, I do struggle with race. I struggle with race because society and basically EVERYONE I know struggles with race. It is 2010, and Jackson-area schools are still largely segregated, its nightlife is segregated, its neighborhoods are segregated, its CHURCHES of all things are segregated, its romantic relationships/encounters/interludes are still segregrated. I thought this was 2010, but apparrently ain't a lot changed since 1910. I guess we all get to use the same bathrooms and water fountains now, but big freaking deal. I'd like to talk about someone I know without having to first answer the question "Is he white or black?" I'd like to go to a store or club without having to worry about what part of town it's own. I'd like to take a black woman out without her looking around the whole time paranoid that everyone is staring at her. I'd like turn on the tv without seeing Obama with a Hitler mustache painted on him because apparently a black man can't be president without being the reincarnation of Stalin. Alright I'm done! And I do think Drummin' struggles with race and race paranoia, but at least he's talking about it openly, unlikely most people. Let's give him space to do that without attacks from any direction, and we all might get somewhere with this thread. A quick thought and I'm out: I used to feel like everyone was treating me weird when I was the only or one of the few white people in a room or neighborhood, and then I figured out it was my own self-consciousness and paranoia. Once I changed my attitude, I haven't had a problem. And I go everywhere in the city, often alone. It really is the white person's burden, for the most part. It was our people that made it this way; it's up to us to get past being uncomfortable trying to reach out, even if people don't color don't embrace us or give us a trophy for "daring" to cross Gallatin Street. The fact that we think we deserve one is a huge part of the problem.

Out of line?! I was serious! I was going to do it as a peace offering. I figured that comment was the most benign/congenial/humorous remark that I made. I thought of it because I just heard about John Mayer in an interview saying that he had a "hood pass," that he was cool with the "brothers."
