JFP reporter Adam Lynch called in from the City Council meeting tonight to report that new Ward 1 Councilman Jeff Weill provided the swing vote to elect Leslie McLemore Council president, and to reject Melton's good friend, Frank Bluntson, who is acting council president. Charles Tillman was elected vice president. Voting for McLemore were the anti-Melton bloc—McLemore, Marshand Crisler, Margaret Barrett-Simon, plus newbie Weill.

Congratulations to McLemore. He may be golden; but, I like to hope he is voting what he thinks is right. So, far I think he is following the wishes of Ward 1. I don't not think a majority of Ward 1 wants Melton to get away with much more, so let's hope he feels the same. It's real easy for the bulk of the residents in Ward 1 to ride out a budget crisis and temporary millage increases. What Ward 1 forgets is that the majority of Jackson can't afford it; especially if it forces more people into poverty potentially leading to more crime problems. We are one of 7 Wards, and we need to remember that. Just like the fact that we may be small, we may have troubles; but, we are the Capital City of the State of Mississippi. It is high time Stokes, Bluntson, and company began to act like this was the Capital.

This was the best news all night. At least Melton won't be able to control Council. He has the city, the police department, Doug Anderson and clearly thinks he now has the D.A.'s office. He doesn't have the sheriff or Council leadership. At least there's that. Who else?

Perhaps, but I live in Ward 1 and I am not happy with that vote. You can't trust or reason with the Meltonites.
