Only Negative Mississippi Spoken Here

OK, Dr. S tried to be positive when he did last week's football forecast. And what did it get him? A weekend of sorry football. Oh sure, Dr. S went 5-1 picking last Saturday's games. And Dr. S could have told you that TCU was going to beat Southern Miss last week, but Dr. S doesn't work on Wednesdays. But how could he have been so wrong about Ole Miss and State? From here on out, it's no more Mr. Nice Doctor …

Dr. S predicted Ole Miss would beat Auburn 24-21. Hey, I got the Ole Miss score right, anyway. But Ole Miss lost its third straight game, 31-24. The Rebels still can't run or stop the run or stop much of anything. And now Eli is making bad decisions. It's the latest in a long line of bad decisions by Eli that started with this one: "I'm going to Ole Miss."

Dr. S said Kentucky would beat Mississippi State 31-21. Again, Dr. S was trying to be positive. He didn't know that the Bulldogs would add shoddy special teams play (UK's Derek Abney returned two punts for touchdowns in the third quarter) to their long list of sins. There was one bright note as freshman running back Jerious Norwood ignited the Bulldog offense in the first half. Naturally, Norwood spent most of the second half on the sideline watching Dontae "Fast As Your Grandma's" Walker stumble around Scott Field. Jackie Sherrill reportedly said, "I thought Dontae was going to have a good season, but then McDonald's started that doggone Big 'n Tasty dollar deal."

Jackson State preserved coach Robert Hughes' job for at least another week by demolishing Arkansas-Pine Bluff 42-0 (Dr. S forecast JSU would win 35-28). Not that it matters, JSU will need lots and lots of help to make it to the SWAC title game in Birmingham. And that's assuming the Tigers win all of their remaining games, including the season finale against Alcorn State. When it comes to JSU, don't assume anything.

Elsewhere, Mississippi Valley punked Prairie View 26-8 (Dr. S said Valley would win 35-7); Alcorn State slipped past Southern 22-20 (Dr. S said the Braves would win 35-30); and Hinds ended its season by whipping East Mississippi 52-28 (Dr. S predicted a 28-17 Eagles' victory). Elsewhere, Delta State hammered Harding 49-25, Pikeville was one bling better than Belhaven 21-20, Mississippi College trounced Texas Luthern 36-16 and Sewanee stopped Millsaps 17-7.
